Characteristics

Caespitose perennial with short, stiff, erect or ascending stolons. Culms 20–60 cm high; midculm internodes glabrous, rarely scaberulous. Young shoots intravaginal or extravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins connate for up to c. ¼ their length, glabrous, smooth, usually purplish; ligule 0.3–1 mm long, truncate, apically distinctly ciliate, abaxially puberulous; blade 6–15 (–40) cm long, c. 0.5 mm diam. (to 1.2 mm wide when flattened), usually stiffly erect, inrolled or narrowly folded, adaxially sparsely scabrous to minutely pilose, abaxially glabrous, smooth or sparsely scaberulous, dull slaty green to distinctly pruinose. Panicle somewhat contracted, 4–8 (–15) cm long. Spikelets 4–6 mm long, with 3–7 bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved: lower glume 1.5–2.2 mm long; upper glume 1.6–2.4 mm long. Web absent or weakly developed. Lemma 1.8–3 mm long, 5-nerved, glabrous or with midnerve and sometimes marginal nerves puberulous near base. Anthers 1.4–1.8 mm long.
