Caespitose perennial. Culms erect, 20–70 cm high; mid-culm internodes variably pubescent to scaberulous. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins free, densely puberulous to pubescent (hairs even, to 0.6 mm long, spreading or deflexed), purplish; ligule 0.4–1.7 (–3) mm long, truncate, apically ciliolate, abaxially pubescent; blade involute, 5–25 cm long, 0.5–0.8 mm diam., ±stiff, adaxially puberulous, abaxially evenly puberulous to densely pubescent (hairs to 0.8 mm long, ±stiff, inclined or spreading), greyish. Panicles contracted but lower branches sometimes spreading, 5–13 cm long. Spikelets (3–) 4.3–7.7 mm long, with 3–5 (–8) bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved, usually pubescent or scabrous-pubescent overall; lower glume 1.8–3 mm long; upper glume 2.5–3.5 mm long. Web absent or rudimentary. Lemma 3.2–5.1 mm long, 5-nerved, evenly pubescent or pubescent in lower half only, with hairs on nerves longer than those in intercostal regions (at least toward base). Anthers 2.3–2.4 mm long.
