Rhizomatous perennial. Culms erect or ascending, 20–31 cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous. Young shoots extravaginal. Leaves basal and cauline; basal sheaths with margins connate for their entire length (but splitting), glabrous or minutely scabrous; ligule 2.5–3.5 mm long, acute to obtuse, apically glabrous, abaxially puberulous; blade flat to folded, 12 cm long, 0.5–2 mm wide, adaxially puberulous, abaxially glabrous. Panicles open, 2–10 cm long. Spikelets 4.3–6 mm long, with 3–6 bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved; lower glume 2.1–3.4 mm long, with lateral nerves short; upper glume 2.8–3.8 mm long. Web not or weakly developed. Lemma 3–3.8 mm long, 5-nerved; keel and (usually) marginal nerves silky-villous in lower half; intercostal regions glabrous or sparsely puberulous. Anthers c. 2 mm long.
