Characteristics

Annual. Leaf-blades linear, short; ligule a narrow ciliate membrane. Inflorescence open, erect, consisting of a number of slender subsecund racemes scattered along a central axis. Spikelets narrow, terete, subsessile, appressed to the rhachis of the racemes, 2–3-flowered, the florets tightly enclosed within the overlapping glumes, disarticulating between the florets, the rhachilla filiform; glumes 1-nerved, as long as the spikelet, membranous, rounded on the back, slightly unequal; lemmas 3-nerved, thinly membranous, rounded on the back, densely villous along the lateral nerves, awned from the 2-lobed tip; awn straight, fine; palea densely villous on the upper part of the keels; anthers 3; callus pointed, appressed villous and laterally bearded. Caryopsis elliptic-oblong, plump, slightly flattened on the hilar side.
