Characteristics

Branched subshrubs with rather stiff branches. Leaves opposite but giving the appearance of being in whorls (falsely verticillate); stipules free, scarious. Flowers hermaphrodite, in dense subsessile axillary cymes; receptacle cupuliform. Sepals 5, free. Petals 5, minute. Stamens 1–2, with the perianth parts perigynous. Ovary with 2 basal ovules and a filiform persistent style. Fruits one-seeded, indehiscent with persistent sepals and borne on enlarged and fleshy rhachides and with the lower parts of the bracts also enlarged and fleshy.
