Characteristics

Flowers purple or pale purple fading to white (usually almost white in dried specimens), pedicels slender, pilose, up to 14 mm. long, in terminal many-flowered racemes up to 30 cm. long, with pilose rhachis and persistent bracts 5–9 mm. long with ovate base and filiform apex, and similar bracteoles.

Leaves up to 25 cm. long and usually not more than 4–5 mm. broad, but occasionally up to 16 mm. broad (in Belgian Congo material), usually linear, grass-like, occasionally very narrowly elliptic, slightly rough with short, somewhat bristly hairs mainly on the upper surface.
Posterior sepal 5 mm. long, keel-shaped, pilose; wing sepals 9–14 x 9–11 mm., obliquely suborbicular, sometimes very minutely ciliate on the margin, otherwise glabrous; anterior sepals 4 mm. long, free, keel-shaped, pilose.
Upper petals 7 mm. long, bent and contorted, ciliate at the base; carina 8 x 4 mm., crest 4 mm. long.
Annual (always ?) herb up to 3 m. tall with erect, sparsely pilosulose or glabrous stems.
Seeds 3 x 1.8 mm., cylindric, with long white silky hairs; caruncular appendages absent.
Capsule 8 x 5.5–6 mm., obovate-oblong, in outline, marginal wing 0.5–0.8 mm. broad.
