Erect annual, simple or branched above, 1–4 dm; lvs linear, or the lowest narrowly spatulate, 1–2 cm × 1–2 mm; peduncles well developed; bracts falling with the fls; racemes short-ovoid or cylindric, very blunt, to 3 cm but bearing attached fls only in the uppermost 1 cm; fls pink or rose; wings obovate, 2.5–3.5 mm, slightly exceeding the cor; aril a fourth or a third as long as the seed; 2n=34. Dry or sandy soil on the coastal plain; s. N.J. to Fla. and Tex.; also inland in Tenn. and rep. from Ky. June–Sept. (P. harperi)
