Characteristics

Stiffly erect, few-branched, glabrescent annual herb to 50 (–260) cm high. Leaves lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, acuminate to subulate, 10–30 mm long (stem leaves usually shorter than the basal ones), 1.5–5 mm wide. Flowers whitish, in terminal racemes 5–20 cm long; bracts and bracteoles subulate, c. 1 mm long, membranous and soon caducous; pedicels filiform, 1.5–2.5 mm long; sepals free, the upper and lower ones narrowly lanceolate, 2–3 mm long, alae (wing sepals) elliptic, 7–9 mm long, 3–3.5 mm wide in fruit, distinctly 3-veined; corolla 4–5 mm long, keel appendages c. 1 mm long and much-branched, lateral petals entire, subequal to keel. Capsule obcordate, c. 5 mm long, narrower than sepals. Seed obloid, c. 2 mm long, silky, with aril c. 0.3 mm long.

Environment

In Victoria, recorded from roadside ditches or dry lake beds, sometimes locally abundant (VicFlora 2021); in South Australia recorded from disturbed grassland, grassy area protruding into swamp, sedgeland swamp, scrub, coastal plain heath, sandy soil in a firebreak, clay soils and swales by roadsides, clay rises under Bulloke, roadside remnant native vegetation including a woodland reserve.
