Rather coarse perennial; culms erect or usually decumbent-spreading at the base, as much as 1 m. long, glabrous; sheaths glabrous, shorter than the internodes; ligules thin, obtuse, 3-5 mm. long; blades 10-30 cm. long, 5-10 mm. wide, smooth and shining beneath, scabrous above and on the margins; panicles 10-35 cm. long, nod-ding, narrow and rather dense, interrupted, the branches in rather distant verticils, floriferous to the base; glumes about 3 mm. long, aristate, gradually narrowed into the awn, very scabrous; lemma 1.5 mm. long with a slender awn about 2 mm. long.
