Characteristics

Rhizome densely scaly; scales on rhizome and stipe bases dimorphic, either lanceolate, 10-15 mm long, 2-6 mm wide, dull brown, with minutely denticulate margins and often with a glossy black centre or linear-acuminate, 12-30 mm long, 0.5-2 mm wide, with hair-like appendages. Fronds 25-75 cm long. Stipe 10-22 cm long, fawn or pale yellow; stipe and rachis with small densely fringed fugacious scales. Lamina 2-3-pinnate, 15-47 cm long, 7.5-22 cm wide, dark green, coriaceous, lacking proliferous buds. Pinnules 7.5-20 mm long, 4-10 mm wide; marginal lobes sharply toothed; apex with a short spine that is usually longer than the marginal teeth. Indusium brown, sometimes with a dark centre, fugacious. Spores fawn.
