Species

Pteridophytes > Polypodiales > Dryopteridaceae > Dryopteridoideae > Polystichum

Characteristics

Rhizome often forming a short, thick trunk to 10 cm long, densely scaly; scales dimorphic; distal scales 10-30 mm long, 3-8 mm wide, coarsely fringed at the base, appressed; proximal scales 10-20 mm long, 2-5 mm wide, spirally twisted, with short marginal hooks. Fronds 30-150 cm long. Stipe 8-40 cm long, densely scaly; scales usually glossy, with a pale border. Lamina 2-3-pinnate, 20-90 cm long, 6-30 cm wide, dark green when mature, yellow-green when young, coriaceous, with proliferous, scaly buds towards the apex; rachis scales 3-7 mm long, 0.3-0.4 mm wide, brown, persistent with margins entire or fringed at the base. Pinnules 2-8 mm long, 1.5-5 mm wide, asymmetrical; margins crenate; lobes obtuse. Sori in 2 rows, distant from margin; indusium with a dark centre, persistent. Spores dark brown.
More
Rhizomes short, thick, erect, sometimes forming small trunks. Stipes 10-35 cm long, densely scaly; scales broad, shiny, with dark brown centres and pale borders. Rachises densely covered in narrow uniformly pale orange-brown scales, bearing 1-2 (rarely more) bulbils near the apices. Laminae narrowly ovate or narrowly oblong, 2-pinnate at base, 20-85 × 6-30 cm. Primary pinnae in 25-35 pairs, narrowly triangular, the longest 3-15 × 1-2.5 cm, rarely bearing bulbils near apices. Secondary pinnae in 5-18 pairs, stalked, ± elliptic but with large basal acroscopic lobe; margins crenate, sharply toothed. Sori round, protected by uniformly pale brown peltate indusia.
