Characteristics

Small trees or treelets. Stipules wanting. Leaves alternate, paripinnate or imparipinnate; distal leaflet rudimentary or exceptionally fully developed; leaflets entire. Inflorescences distal or axillary thyrses, with flowers in lateral, sessile dichasia. Flowers bisexual or functionally unisexual; calyx zygomorphic, sepals 5, free, imbricate; corolla zygomorphic, petals 4-5, clawed, with a bifid appendage above the claw; disc unilateral, semi-annular to 4-lobed; stamens 8; ovary 3-carpellate, with a single ovule per carpel; style short, with 3 recurved, stigmatic branches. Fruit splitting into 3 membranous, inflated, unwinged, wrinkled mericarps. Seeds exarillate.
