Characteristics

Perennial herb with fleshy branching stolons; stems procumbent to ascending, to 25 cm long, 1.5–2.5 mm thick.. Leaves alternate, crowded, fleshy, linear-elliptic, 5.5–11 mm long, 1.5–2.5 mm wide, obtuse; axillary hairs in dense woolly tufts ± 2 mm long, some with slightly expanded scaly bases.. Flowers large and showy, in terminal clusters of 1–3 encircled by involucral leaves enclosing dense woolly hairs, open in the morning; involucral leaves resembling the foliar leaves.. Sepals ovate, 6–7.5 mm long, lightly keeled except near the base, outer acute, inner with a small apical crest; petals 5, magenta, free, 7–12 mm long, obovate, rounded to retuse with a small central apiculum; stamens 25–30; stigma 3–5-branched.. Capsule dehiscing near the middle, base deeply infundibuliform, lid 2.3–3 mm high, a rounded dome slightly wider than high; seeds 0.6–0.7 mm long, metallic grey or silvery-grey, the testa cells stellate-conical with black tips.
