Characteristics

Trees to 9 m tall, the branchlets terete, ultimately angular, glabrous, the nodes 3-15 cm apart. Leaves oblong, ovate oblong, rarely rotund, 8-32 cm long, 3.5-22 cm wide, rounded or widely deltoid at the apex, obtuse, cuneate, acute, rarely truncate at the base, the costa plane or grooved above, prominent beneath, the lateral veins 6-8, the intervenal areas delicately reticulate, the margin usually revolute, subcoriaceous, shiny and glabrous above, glabrous to occasionally fine-ly puberulent beneath, the petioles lignose, 0.3-2.5 cm long, glabrous, the stipules triangular, 1.0-1.3 cm long, obtuse, coriaceous, glabrous, somewhat dilated near attachment. Inflorescences terminal, glabrous, drying black, the elongate flowers in cymules disposed radially at the end of a short peduncle, the latter 0.5-2.2 cm long. Flowers sessile or subsessile, the hypanthium oblong or turbinate, ca. 0.8 cm long, smooth, glabrous, drying black, the calycine cup shorter than the hy-panthium, thickly carnose, the teeth evanescent or 5, triangular to subrotund, to 0.5 mm long; corolla white, elongate, slender, in bud having a clavate appearance, the connate lobes oblong or ovate oblong, distinctly flexed, to 1.5 cm long, obtuse, the tube 4.0-12.5(-16.0) cm long, 0.2-0.4 cm wide, glabrous outside, puberulent at the base and at the mouth within, thickly petaloid, the lobes 4, often reflexed at maturity, narrowly oblong, 1.2-1.7 cm long, puberulent proximally; stamens 4, the anthers exserted, oblong, crescentic, ca. 4 mm long, acute at the apex and base, the abaxial face puberulent, the filaments attached at the mouth, shorter than the corolla lobes, the style filamentous, as long as the corolla tube, the stigmas digitiform or narrowly oblong, ca. 2 mm long. Fruits resembling an or-ange, globose, 4-5(-6.7) cm in diam., maturing yellow, smooth, glabrous, the seeds white to greenish, numerous in a greenish pulp.
