Characteristics

Rhizomatous, aquatic, perennial herb with submerged and floating leaves, and leaves intermediate between these. Stem terete, to 3 m long; turions not recorded. Stipules convolute. Submerged leaves petiolate and ±circular to sessile and lanceolate; transition leaves alternate, petiolate and ±circular, translucent; blade to 13.5 cm long, 1.5–3 cm wide, cordate, truncate, or tapered at base, acute or rounded at apex, 11–21-veined. Floating leaves ±circular, 2–6.5 cm long, 1.8–5 cm wide, cordate or truncate at base, obtuse at apex, coriaceous, 19–32-veined. Inflorescence a terminal spike, emergent, dense, to 4 cm long. Peduncles erect, becoming curved when fruiting. Fruit 3–4 mm long (including beak), keeled with 3 ridges, the central more prominent, with prominent beak.
