Characteristics

Rooted aquatic herb, with submerged and floating leaves.. Rhizomes perennial, slender, terete, white, with apical winter buds.. Stems annual, sparingly to much branched, slender, terete, up to 3.5 m long, ± spongy; specialized dormant turions not developing.. Submerged leaves almost always present, the young ones yellow-green or brownish, the old ones bright green or dark olive-green, often with a reddish or brownish tinge, sessile to shortly petiolate, often incrusted with calcium carbonate; petiole 0– 30(– 82) mm long; lamina narrowly lanceolate to oblong-elliptical, sometimes that of the lower leaves reduced to phyllodes, 45– 190(– 260) mm long, (3– )7– 28 mm wide, 4– 70 times as long as wide, membranous and translucent, cuneate, acute to mucronate, 5– 11(– 13)-veined, with or without narrow rows of lacunae bordering the midrib, margins often slightly undulate, entire or bearing very minute hyaline teeth; intermediate leaves sometimes present, instead of floating leaves; floating leavesabsent or present, yellow-green to dark green, with a reddish tinge; petiole (14– )30– 70(– 200)mm long, never discoloured at junctionwith the lamina; lamina narrowly oblong to elliptical or ovate, 43– 130 mm long, 12– 30 mm wide, 2– 6 times as long as wide, opaque, subcoriaceous to coriaceous, 11– 21-veined, entire, mostly narrowly cuneate at base, obtuse to acute; stipules axillary, convolute, 20– 62 mm long, translucent, acute, persistent.. Peduncles mostly terminal or lateral in the axils of submerged leaves, sometimes in the axils of floating leaves, 35– 250 mm long, 2– 3 times as long as the fruiting spike, thicker than the stem; spikes emergent, cylindrical, 30– 90 mm long when in fruit, contiguous.. Flowers numerous, sepals pale greeny brown; anthers yellow green; carpels 4; stigmas whitish becoming mauve-brown.. Fruitlets pale brown-green, 2.9– 3.9(– 4.1) mm long, 2– 2.5 mm wide, ventrally nearly straight; dorsal keel distinct, lateral keels sometimes present; beak short, obtuse.. Stem anatomy: stele of the trio type, rarely of the proto or oblong type, endodermis of the U-type, interlacunar bundles present, in 1 circle (rarely 2, one being incomplete), subepidermal bundles absent or scattered ones present, pseudohypodermis present, 1-layered.. Fig. 3 (p. 11).
More
Floating leaves absent or present; lamina coriaceous, light green, opaque, often with a reddish or brownish tinge, narrowly oblong to elliptical, mostly narrowly cuneate at base; petiole sometimes narrowly winged towards the lamina, never with a discoloured section. Submerged leaves almost always present, sessile, subsessile to petiolate; lamina membraneous, narrowly lanceolate to oblong-elliptical, sometimes the lowest leaves reduced to phyllodes, green-brownish or reddish, seldom fresh green, generally 7(-9)-veined, rarely up to 13-veined, lower leaves sometimes only 5-veined, with acute to mucronate apex; petiole mostly 0-3 cm long, rarely that of the uppermost leaves up to 7 cm long, mostly 0-0.2 times as long as the lamina, rarely that of the uppermost leaves up to as long as the lamina. Stipules persistent, relatively long and narrow throughout their length, acute. Peduncles thicker than the stem, at least towards the spike. Fruits 2.9-3.9(-4.1) mm long, greyish green or dark green to yellowish green or sometimes yellow-brown, with ± obtuse and low dorsal keel.
Large submerged plants up to 200 cm long from a perennial creeping woody rhizome with internodes 4-8 cm long. Stems erect 30-200 cm high, 1-3 mm in diam., terete. Leaves submerged or occasionally the upper floating, sessile, linear-lanceolate, attenuated to the base and apex, 10-20 cm long and 1-2 cm broad, apex apiculate, margin smooth, finely undulate, distinctly net-veined with the cross-veins oblique, ascending, midrib prominent, lamina of the submerged leaves thin and soft, the exposed ones coriaceous, shiny; stipules persistent, folded, the lower amplexicaul, the upper spreading, large, lanceolate, 2-4 cm long. Spikes on swollen scapes, 4-10 cm long, many flowered. Drupe Ovoid, 3-4 mm, smooth, ventral side fairly straight, dorsal rounded, beak short, occasionally with lateral keels.
Perennial herb, hydrophyte, height depending on depth of water; stem erect, terete. Leaves submerged or occasionally the upper floating, sessile, linear-lanceolate, 100-200 x 10-20 mm; apices attenuate, margins smooth, finely undulate, midrib prominent. Scapes swollen. Spikes many-flowered. Flowering time June-Oct. Fruit an ovoid drupe, smooth, ventral side fairly straight, dorsal rounded, beak short, occasionally with lateral keels.
Perennial, aquatic herb, up to 0.2 m high. Leaves submerged and upper ones floating; all leaves usually without petioles, blade narrowly ovate to oblong elliptic, > 10 mm wide, net-veined, margins entire, smooth or undulate, not or slightly leathery. Flowers: in many-flowered spikes; Jul.-Dec. Fruit 3-4 mm long.
Perennial herb, up to 200 mm tall. Leaves all submerged, uniform, over 10 mm wide, upper leaves sometimes floating, net-veined, leaf margin entire, smooth or undulate. Spikes many-flowered. Beak of fruit short.
Large, submerged aquatic. Leaves sometimes floating, linear-lanceolate. Flowers on swollen peduncles, green.
