Monoecious trees, the young branches usually more or less aculeate, rarely un-armed. Leaves alternate, distichous; stipules fully amplexicaul. Both staminate and pistillate inflorescences of globose or subglobose heads. Staminate flowers many: perianth of 4 scarcely united tepals; stamens 4, with broadly oval, basifixed anthers. Pistillate flowers few (3-9): perianths tubular-conic, shortly 4-dentate, strongly coherent in the head; ovary superior, the stigma deeply 2-lobed, widely exserted. Fruiting head a fleshy syncarp.
