Cultivation

Origin: in Excelsior, Minn., by Univ. of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Farm. Introd. in 1949. Self-pollinated seedling of Prunus tomentosa originally obtained from O.M. Jenson of Albert Lea, Minn., in 1925; selected in 1940; tested as Minn. 63. Tree: bushy; vigorous; productive; self-fruitful; bears second year after planting; ornamental. Fruit: about 1/2 inch in diam.; skin bright medium red, attractive; flesh meaty, juicy, pleasantly subacid; stone small, long oval, free; quality good; for dessert and jelly; ripens in mid-July.
