Characteristics

A low tufted herb, with densely-crowded linear basal leaves hiding the stem, sometimes offsetting by means of runners rooting at the nodes.. Stems thick, short, erect, persistent, mostly subterranean, branched or unbranched, 1–8 cm. long.. Basal leaves sessile, with broad membranous bases, linear, entire, strongly 1-nerved, glabrous, often with recurved margin, shortly aristate, 4–90 mm. long.. Flowering stems annual, similar in appearance to the runners, ascending, glabrous, solitary or several, 0.5–2.5 mm. diameter at the base, with internodes up to 1.5 cm. long, leafy, simple or much branched in a divaricate cymose manner, bearing whorls of leaves and flowers at the nodes. Stem-leaves stipulate, sessile, linear or lanceolate, entire and rather glaucous, shortly aristate, 2–3.5 mm. long.. Stipules persistent, linear.. Flowers creamy or greenish, pedicellate, in sessile umbelliform cymes clustered at the nodes.. Pedicels 2–5 mm. long.. Sepals 5, broadly ovate, green, with wide membranous margins, 2–2.5 mm. long in flower.. Ovary 5-(rarely 3-) locular, of 5 (rarely 3) carpels; fruit a 5-(rarely 3-) lobed capsule, depressed above, splitting into as many triangular valves.. Fig. 4, p. 12.
More
In single or multiple tufts or small cushions. Stems erect, simple or branched, 1-8 cm long, much widened at the top to 0.5-2 cm diam. Leaves densely crowded in rosettes depressed on top. Leaves spreading, ascending or incurved, 0.6-1.1 cm long, 0.1-0.3 cm wide, linear, strap-shaped, acute, with a terminal bristle 1-2 mm long. Leaves parallel sided, not narrowed to the base, opaque, the midrib distinct and slightly projecting on the underside, the margins slightly thickened. Stipules caducous except on the inflorescence. Inflorescences few or many, erect, 3-30 cm high, simple or branched, with whorled leaves and flowers. Peduncle stout, 2-10 cm long, ending in a whorl of leaves or stipules, with 0-6 branches, the upper nodes, if branched, with 1-2 unequal branches. Whorls of leaves and flowers few or many, 0.5-1.5 cm apart below, closer above. Bract-like leaves but 2-5 mm long, with persistent stipules about half their length. Flowers crowded, on pedicels 2-5 mm long. Perianth segments incurved, about 1 mm long. Stamens on a very small ring-like disc. Ovary 5-angled, less often 3; stigmas 5 or 3, spreading or recurved, often longer than the style.
Perennial subshrub or cushion plant, 0.01-0.08 m high; stems erect, widened at top; rooting at nodes, forming runners. Leaves crowded into basal rosette, linear, not narrowed at base, acute with terminal bristle, midrib distinct; stipules caducous, except on inflorescence. Inflorescences glomerulate cymes; peduncles up to 100 mm long. Flowers crowded, pedicellate, small. Perianth segments incurved, herbaceous, free, green, with membranous margins. Stamens on a small, annular disc. Stigmas (3)5 spreading or recurved, longer than style. Flowering time Oct.-Mar. Fruit a chartaceous, loculicidal capsule; 1 ovule per locule. Seeds blackish brown.
Perennial herb; with basal leaves in single or in multiple tufts or small cushions. Leaves with tufts depressed in centre, spreading or ascending; blade linear, strap-shaped, 6-11 mm long, midrib projecting, apex with a bristle 1-2 mm long. Flowers: inflorescence simple or branched, 30-300 mm high; peduncle stout, 20-100 mm long, ending in a whorl of leaves or stipules, with 0-6 branches, flowers crowded on pedicels 2-5 mm long; perianth segments ± 1 mm long, yellowish green; Sep.-Mar.
Leaves densely crowded in rosettes, spreading, ascending or incurved, sessile; laminas 4–45 mm. long, linear or narrowly lanceolate, 1-nerved, entirely glabrous, often revolute at margin, aristate; stipules scarious, sometimes caducous.
Herb with basal leaves in single or in multiple tufts or small cushions. Leaves linear, not narrowed to base, midrib projecting. Leaf tufts depressed in centre. Inflorescences 30-300 mm tall. Flowers yellowish green.
Inflorescences few or many, simple or branched, with whorled bractiform leaves and flowers in sessile umbelliform cymes clustered at nodes.
Stems erect, 1–8 cm. long, simple or branched, thick, short; plants sometimes spreading by means of runners rooting at the nodes.
Perianth-segments c. 2 mm. long, broadly ovate, green with wide membranous margins.
Flowers greenish or whitish, pedicellate; pedicels up to 5 mm. long.
