Characteristics

Erect shrubby herb to 0.5(?-1.5) m tall; plant drying green; young stems puberulous or sparsely so with broad curved hairs with purple walls. Leaves elliptic (rarely linear-lanceolate), largest (4-)8-19 x (1-)2-8.5 cm, base attenuate to cuneate, abruptly (more rarely gradually) narrowing below a subacute to acuminate apex with an acute to obtuse tip, glabrous or with a few hairs on lamina and midrib; petiole to 3 cm long. Cymes 2-17(-25) cm long, unbranched or with lateral cymes to 7 cm long from lower nodes, sometimes also with elongated cymes from upper leaf axiIs or with sessile cymules here, rarely with the cyme reduced to axillary clusters; flowers solitary or in 3(-7)-flowered cymules towards base of cyme (rarely with 2 cymules per bract); peduncle to 15 cm long, if cyme unbranched with 1(-2) pairs of sterile bracts; axis puberulous or sparsely so with curved (rarely straight) hairs with purple walls, with or without stalked capitate glands; bracts linear to lanceolate, 2-5 mm long, sparsely puberulous-ciliate and sometimes with a few glands; pedicels 1-3 mm long, glabrous to puberulous; bracteoles as bracts, 2-4 mm long. Calyx 3-6 mm long, on the outside sparsely puberulous, with or without stalked capitate glands, inside sparsely puberulous. Corolla white to pale mauve, with or without darker dots on lower lip, outside subglabrous to puberulous and with (rarely without) scattered capitate glands; tube straight or slightly curved, basal linear part (1-)1.4-2.1(-2.5) cm long; throat 2-4 mm long, lobes 8-13 x 4-7 mm in lower lip, elliptic, rounded or 3-toothed. Stamens included or slightly exserted; filaments ± 2 mm long; anthers pale to purple, 1-1.5 mm long, apiculate or rounded, hairy on connective. Capsule 1.6-2.5(-3) cm long; seed 3-5 x 2-4 mm, densely reticulate-verrucose on both sides, with a jagged rim.
