Characteristics

Dioecious shrubs or trees. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate; lateral leaflets opposite to alternate, asymmetric at the base, petiolulate, with the secondary nerves curved. Inflorescences of axillary much-branched and lax many-flowered panicles. Male flowers: sepals 3–4(–5), imbricate; petals 3–4(–5), imbricate; stamens 6–8(–10), the episepalous slightly longer, inserted below the annular crenulate disk; vestigial ovary 3–4-lobulate, at the centre of the disk. Female flowers with small staminodes; ovary globose, 3–4(–5)-locular; styles 3–4(–5), well separated, subterminal, very short. Drupe oblong-obovoid with resinous mesocarp and woody endocarp, 3–4(–5)-operculate at the apex, usually with only 1 locule fertile. Seeds l(–2), oblong; testa thin; cotyledons plano-convex.
