Pseudotsuga Carrière

Douglas-fir (en), Douglas (fr)

Genus

Gymnosperms > Pinales > Pinaceae

Characteristics

Trees evergreen; trunk straight; branches irregularly vertical; branchlets with slightly raised, circular leaf scars; short branchlets absent; winter buds ovoid or fusiform, not resinous. Leaves spirally arranged, ± linear, flattened, longitudinally grooved adaxially, stomatal lines abaxial, in 2 white bands, separated by an elevated midvein, vascular bundle 1, resin canals 2, sublateral, marginal, base ± twisted. Pollen cones axillary, solitary, cylindric; pollen not saccate, globose. Seed cones developing from axillary buds near ends of 2nd-year branchlets, solitary, pedunculate, pendulous, purplish red or green, maturing in 1st year. Seed scales variously shaped, convex, woody, margin rounded toward apex, persistent. Bracts well developed, exserted or included, 3-lobed, straight or reflexed, with a cusp longer than lateral lobes. Seeds borne in a shallow, membranous cup covering 1 side of seed, adnate to wing; wing obliquely ovate, short, covering only a small portion of seed scale. Cotyledons 5-8(-12). Germination epigeal. 2n = 24 (26 in P. menziesii).
More
Trees conic, evergreen. Bark initially smooth, with resin blisters; in age reddish brown, corky, furrowed. Branches often pendulous, irregularly whorled; short (spur) shoots absent; leaf scars transversely elliptic, slightly raised proximally but essentially flush with twig distally. Buds elongate, not resinous, apex acute. Leaves borne singly, persisting 6--8 years, alternate, short-stalked, flattened; resin canals 2, marginal. Cones borne on year-old twigs. Pollen cones axillary. Seed cones maturing first season, shed whole, deflexed or pendent, ellipsoid, ovoid, or cylindric, nearly sessile, lacking apophysis and umbo; scales persistent, apex rounded; bracts ± exserted, apex 3-lobed, lobes with acute apices, central lobe narrow, longer than lateral lobes. Seeds winged; cotyledons 6--12. x =12, 13.
Large resinous evergreen trees with rough, furrowed bark when mature; branches irregularly whorled. Short shoots 0. Buds narrow, very acute, glabrous, not resinous. Lvs single, spirally arranged, ± 2-ranked (except on young erect shoots), linear, green and grooved above and with 2 whitish or glaucous stomatic bands below; resin ducts marginal, 2; vascular bundle 1. ♂ strobili (cones) axillary, catkin-like. ♀ cones terminal on short branches, maturing in first year, composed of numerous, free, 3-lobed bract scales which are prominently exserted in mature cone, and shorter, imbricate ovuliferous scales; ovules 2 on each scale. Mature cone pendulous, falling whole. Seed with large wing.
