Characteristics

Shrubs or small trees, rarely climbers (not in East Africa); stems glandular and viscid when young. Leaves alternate, often viscid, entire or serrulate. Capitula in terminal corymbs, disciform or radiate; phyllaries in several series, the outermost smallest, imbricate; receptacle naked or with scale-like projections. Marginal florets in 1 to several rows, with ray or 2–3-dentate; central florets functionally male, tube narrowly funnel-shaped, anthers with obtuse base. Achenes scarcely compressed, 3–10-ribbed, pubescent; pappus of uniseriate barbellate setae, very shortly united at base.
