Leaves deciduous, opposite subopposite or alternate, shortly petiolate; blades ovate, lanceolate or elliptic, up to 13 cm. long and 5 cm. broad, often much smaller, usually acute at the apex, cuneate or rounded at the base, varying from glabrescent to densely rusty-tomentose on the lower surface which is not markedly pallid and reticulation in consequence not conspicuous; glandular dots numerous; upper surface glabrous or glabrescent.. Inflorescence terminating either main or lateral shoots, variable in size and degree of indumentum, sessile, appearing paniculate.. Sepals ovate-elliptic, about 3 mm. long.. Petals elliptic, up to 5 mm. long, with linear glands, white with reddish marks,. Stamens 8–13 per bundle; filaments villous.. Staminodes fleshy, glabrous.. Berry red, purple or black.
