Characteristics

Plant to c. 25 cm. tall at fl. Stem partly enclosed in lfy bracts. Rosette lvs ∞; lamina c. 15–20 × 6 mm., ovate to lanceolate, acute; petiole shorter, winged; cauline lvs few, narrow, sheathing. Fl. us. solitary, remote from highest bract. Dorsal sepal 15–20 mm. tall, erect for most of its length then shortly horizontal, acute; lateral sepals united only near base, free parts linear and almost parallel, the whole deflexed in fully open fl. Petals narrow and almost parallel-sided. Labellum conspicuous, terete, filiform, clad throughout most of its length in long yellow hairs, the tip dark, glab., broader with narrow wings; basal appendage short, almost entire. Column erect; wings broader than long, ciliate over most of their free margins; stigma broad, long.

Flower stem 200–40  tall. Leaves 10–25, 15–45 x 8–12mm, dark green with pale areas and netted veins. Flower semi-nodding, 55–65 x 12–14mm, pale translucent green with darker green netted veins and markings and purple-brown frontal markings, shiny. Dorsal sepal point filamentous, 10–1  long, suberect. Lateral sepals deflexed, 40–4  long; pad dark reddish-black; free points almost filamentous, 25–3  long, often widely divergent. Petals purplish-brown. Labellum 22–2  long, thread-like; labellum hairs sparse, pale yellow, 4–  long; apical knob 4–4.5 x 0.8mm, thin, dark brown.

Environment

Widespread and locally common, especially in high rainfall coastal and near-coastal areas, but also extending to adjacent inland sites, growing in shrubby forests and under sheoaks in freely draining sands and laterite.
