Leaves 5–7 in basal rosette, uppermost leaf usually sheathing base of flower, 40–100 x 15–30mm, dark green, fleshy, margins entire. Flower stem 50–12 tall, smooth, stout, fleshy. Flower semi-nodding, 35–40 x 20–25mm, green and white with dark reddish-brown lateral sepals and petals. Dorsal sepal of similar length to petals, tapered to a short point. Lateral sepals loosely embracing galea and separated from petals by narrow side gap, strongly scabrous (appearing velvety or hairy). Sinus flat in side view, deeply notched in front view, densely scabrous. Free points tapered, 20–2 long, often curved back, just exceeding hood. Petals widely flared, scabrous. Labellum oblong to elliptical, shallowly curved near apex, not protruding but tip visible above sinus when set, 14–17 x 3.5–4.5mm, dark brown, blunt.
Widely distributed but disjunct and highly localised in coastal and near-coastal localities, growing among moss and litter on sheltered slopes and swales of consolidated calcareous and acidic dunes in thickets of coastal teatree and grey to white sandy loam under dense coastal scrub; less commonly among coarse coastal Poa tussocks.
