Flower erect, 18–22 x 5–7mm, greenish-brown to dark chocolate-brown, tip of galea obliquely erect. Dorsal sepal longer than petals, sharply pointed. Lateral sepals loosely embracing galea and separated from petals by wide side gap. Sinus shallowly curved in side view, deeply notched in front view. Locally common in coastal and near-coastal areas growing on dunes and swales in scrub and littoral forests in freely draining sands; also in hinterland ranges and mountainous areas some distance inland growing in wetter forest in moss pads on rocks, and in loam and clay loam. Var.: Varies in flower size and depth of colour. Plants with tall flower stems and narrow very dark chocolate-brown flowers with long free points on lateral sepals and distinctly semi-erect galea are prominent in parts of SE Qld. These match the type specimens of the species. Plants with smaller paler flowers (mainly green and white) with decurved brown galea apex and relatively short free points with incurved tips occur on edge of escarpments in Lamington NP. Plants from NSW have green and white flowers with red to brown lateral sepals, petals and galea tip, horizontal to erect galea and relatively short free points.
