Rosette leaves 6–9, elliptic, 10–35 x 8–12mm. Flower stem 150–35 tall, 3– across, 1–10-flowered. Stem bracts 5–6. Flowers porrect to semi-nodding, 25–32 x 8–11mm, translucent white with dark reddish-brown to blackish stripes and chequered markings. Dorsal sepal point filamentous, 5– long, porrect to upcurved. Lateral sepals wider than hood, flat to shallowly concave, hairy; free points filamentous, 10–1 long, widely divergent. Petals with small basal flanges, 15–16 x 4.5–5mm. Labellum elliptic-obovate, 6–7.5 x 2.5–3mm, relatively thin-textured, dark brown to blackish-brown, broadly channelled, nearly flat, hairy; margins weakly scalloped, with 7–10 forward-pointing bristles 1– long; basal lobe thick, leaning back, densely covered with numerous very short hairs and bristles.
Widespread but disjunct in inland areas, sometimes locally common, growing in drier types of open forest, particularly box-ironbark forest with sparse goundcover; also native pine woodland and patches of mallee heath in freely draining shallow stony soil, gravels, sands and clay loam.
