Characteristics

Rosette leaves 4–6, ovate to oblong, 15–65 x 8–20mm, dark green, veins prominent, margins flat or crinkled. Flower stem 60–250-(–400)mm tall. Flower erect, 15–20 x 5–7mm, green and white at base, apex dark brown or blackish (rarely green), tip nearly horizontal. Dorsal sepal slightly longer than petals, sharply pointed. Lateral sepals loosely embracing galea and separated from petals by wide side gap. Sinus flat in side view, deeply notched in front view. Free points 16–3  long, erect, divergent. Petals shortly pointed. Labellum tip just visible above sinus when set, ovate, margins curved, 5–7 x 2.5–3mm, dark red-brown, blunt.

Environment

Widespread and common in range of moist habitats from coast to ranges and montane areas, favouring cool shady moist conditions such as sheltered slopes, gullies, swales and stream banks, but occasionally found on exposed coastal headlands, bare river banks and in relatively open drier sites. Habitats include coastal scrub, teatree scrub, heathland, heathy forest, littoral forest, open forest, woodland, sheoak groves, rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest and fern gullies in a range of soils including moisture-retentive sands, peats, clays, clay loams and rich, well-structured mountain loams.
