Characteristics

Flowering and non-flowering plants dissimilar, growing as individuals. Non-flowering plants consist of rosette of 3–7 stalked light green leaves 7–40 x 5–15mm. Flowering plants have no basal rosette but consist of flower stem 200–90  tall with 6–15 stem leaves 30–50 x 8–1  and 1–5 flowers; lowest stem leaf is small, bract-like, reddish-purple and stem-clasping. Flowers semi-nodding, tubular or funnel-shaped, 30–35 x 13–16mm, white with green and brown markings (sometimes red tinged). Dorsal sepal ridged, with sharply reflexed point 4–  long. Petals longer than main part of dorsal sepal, tips hooked outwards. Lateral sepals ridged, obliquely erect, with narrow side gap, fused for half their length then sharply recurved, with descending filamentous free points 23–2  long. Labellum mostly enclosed in flower, tip just visible, 3-lobed, 9–11 x 4–4.5mm, reddish, abruptly narrowed into linear warty point; margins of side lobes with stiff retrorse hairs.

Widespread and generally common, growing in open forest, shrubland, sheoak woodland and mallee shrubland in freely draining sands and sandy clay; also around margins of granite outcrops and in crevices and pockets on rocks themselves.
