Characteristics

Caespitose perennial. Culms erect, branching intravaginally, 34–70 cm high. Leaves: ligule 3–6 mm long; blade involute and folded towards apex, 7–14 (–25) cm long, 0.5–1 mm wide. Inflorescence spreading at anthesis, well exserted above flag leaf, 11.5–20 cm long; lateral branches scabridulous; primary branches undivided at least 1–8 mm, up to 9–22 mm; maximum total branch length 48–65 mm. Spikelets 4.3–9 (–13.6) mm long; bisexual florets 4–8 (–13). Lower glume 1.2–2.3 mm long; upper glume 1.9–3.5 mm long. Callus pubescent. Lemma 2.4–3.4 mm long, glabrous or puberulous towards base. Palea 2.6–3.4 mm long; keels scabrous to ciliate in lower half. Anthers 1.3–2.1 mm long, creamy white, sometimes tinged purple.
