Characteristics

Slender caespitose annual or perennial. Culms erect, branching intravaginally, 13–75 cm high. Leaves: ligule 0.9–3.8 mm long; blade involute, 3.3–22 cm long, 0.5–1 mm wide. Inflorescence open, sparse, fully exserted from flag leaf or rarely partially exserted, 130–230 mm long; lateral branches scabridulous, soon widely spreading, bearing spikelets mostly near tips; primary branches undivided at least 4–50 mm, up to 25–70 mm; maximum total branch length 50–140 mm. Spikelets 4–8 mm long; bisexual florets 3–5 (–8). Lower glume 1–2.0 mm long; upper glume 1.9–3 mm long, Callus hairy. Lemma 2.0–3.3 mm long, glabrous or puberulous near base; midvein not extending to apex. Palea 2–3 mm long; keels glabrous in lower half. Anthers 0.5–1.0 mm long, creamy white.
