Characteristics

Slender caespitose annual or perennial. Culms erect, branching intravaginally, 41–55 cm high. Leaves: ligule 2.5–5 mm long; blade involute, 12–22 cm long, 0.8–2.5 mm wide. Inflorescence contracted at anthesis, partially enclosed by flag leaf sheath, 15–19 cm long; lateral branches mostly glabrous, with spikelets crowded near base; primary branches undivided at least 1–2 mm, up to 3–17 mm; maximum total branch length 10–70 mm. Spikelets 6.5–10.5 mm long; bisexual florets 5–10. Lower glume 1.9–2.8 mm long; upper glume 3.1–4 mm long. Callus glabrous. Lemma 3.1–4.5 mm long, glabrous; midvein not extending to apex. Palea 2.9–3.4 mm long; keels glabrous in lower half, scabrous only in upper ¼. Anthers 0.8–1 mm long, creamy white.
