Characteristics

Leaves tending to be restricted to apex of shoots, brown or black-brown when dry; blades 4–8.5 × 1.6–3.8 cm, oblong-elliptic to narrowly obovate or less often elliptic, obtuse to rounded at apex, acute at base, coriaceous, shiny above; lateral nerves in 3–5 main pairs, tertiary nerves obscure; domatia present as conspicuous tufts of hair; petioles 3–7 mm long; stipules 5–7 mm long, often triangular, acuminate, present at the top 1–2 nodes only.

Fruit 8–9 × 8–9 mm, obcordate in outline, indented at apex and distinctly tapered at base, probably with a small lobe on either side of each lobe but these lobes are indistinct when dry.
Flowers unisexual, 4-merous, borne in 3–8-flowered pedunculate umbels; peduncles 3–7 mm long; pedicels 2.5–4 mm long; bracts 4–5 mm long.
Calyx tube 2 mm long in female flowers (corolla just fallen), tending to be ridged or reduced in male flowers; limb 0.5 mm long, dentate.
Corolla cream-coloured; tube 1.25–2 mm long, congested with hairs at throat; lobes 1.5 × 1 mm, ovate, acuminate.
Subshrub or shrub 1–6 m tall, or tree 15–20 m tall; stems glabrous, covered with grey bark.
Pyrenes 9.75 × 4 mm, narrowly obovoid with a well defined crest around the apex, rugulose.
Pollen presenter 1 mm across, very deeply cleft in two when mature.
