Characteristics

Leaves grey-green when dry; blades 0.8–2.2 × 0.4–1 cm, narrowly obovate or elliptic, rounded or obtuse at apex, acute to cuneate at base, glabrous, papery, dull above; lateral and tertiary nerves indistinct; domatia absent; petiole very reduced, up to 1 mm long; stipules up to 2 mm long, triangular, apiculate.

Small tree or shrub, up to 2.5 m high. Lateral branches decussate, frequently reduced to spurs, sometimes spine-like. Leaves narrowly obovate or elliptic, 6-35(-45) mm long. Corolla tube 1.5 mm long. Fruit 5-7 mm. Flowers yellowish.
Flowers unisexual, 4-merous, borne in 1–3-flowered shortly pedunculate umbels; peduncles 1–2 mm long; pedicels very reduced, up to 1 mm long; bracts 1–2 mm long, ovate to broadly ovate, obtuse.
Shrub or small tree 2–4 m tall; lateral branches perpendicular to the main stem, supporting reduced and sometimes spine-like side shoots, glabrous, covered with light to dark grey bark.
Calyx tube reduced in male flowers, not known in female flowers; limb c. 1 mm long with tubular part reduced and four equal triangular or lanceolate to ovate lobes.
Fruit 5–7 × 6–8 mm, broadly oblong in outline, bilobed, indented at the apex and somewhat narrowed at the base; pedicel up to 0.7(1.5) mm long.
Pyrene c. 5 × 3.5 mm, ± obovoid, ventral face slightly flattened, with an apical crest scarcely discernible, slightly rugulose.
Corolla cream-coloured; tube 1.5 mm long, sparsely hairy within; lobes 1.5 × 1–1.25 mm ovate, shortly apiculate.
Pollen presenter c. 0.3 mm across, broadly ovoid.
Style distinctly longer than the corolla tube.
