Very early-season, medium-size Asian pear. Origin: Prefectural Horticultural Experiment Station, Kanagawa, Japan. Asahi × Kitsukawasei; crossed 1954; selected 1969; named Choju (meaning ‘long life’) and released in 1973. Tree: vigor medium to strong; blooms mid-to late season; pollinizers Chojuro, Kosui, Hosui; susceptible to fire blight and bacterial blight (Pseudomonas syringae); resistant to black spot (Alternaria alternata) in Japan. Fruit: size medium, 125 g; oblate; skin russeted; flesh very sweet; ripens very early, before Shinsui, 110 d after first bloom.
