Characteristics

 Annual herbs; stems erect, leafy. Vegetative indument of mixed flagelliform hairs and smaller T-shaped hairs. Leaves alternate, pinnatilobed or pinnatisect, the lobes revolute. Capitula homogamous, many in corymbiform cymes; involucre subglobose to urceolate; phyllaries increasing in size upwards, slightly scarious, ± indurated proximally. Florets narrowly funnel-shaped, with 5 lobes; anthers with obtuse sagittate bases and shortly ovate-appendiculate apices; style branches subulate and hairy. Achenes oblong, truncate, without pappus.

Leaves alternate, sessile, or petiolate and broadly amplexicaul in R. apiifolium M.G. Gilbert, pinnatipartitely lobed or pinnatisect; lobes mostly simple, linear, irregular in length along a midrib, revolute (lobes oblong, deeply serrate-dentate in R. apiifolium).
Achenes shortly obovoid-oblong, rounded-truncate above with 4–6 low broad ribs separated by narrow grooves, surface densely beset with closely-spaced single-celled tuberculate trichomes.
Involucre subglobose-cupuliform (urceolate), phyllaries increasing in size to the inside, somewhat scarious or lower part ± indurated.
Vegetative indumentum consisting of erect flagelliform hairs, intermixed with smaller appressed ± T-shaped hairs on young growth.
Capitula homogamous discoid, numerous in corymbiform cymes, capitula stalks short or to 2.5 cm. in R. apiifolium.
Anther apices shortly ovate-appendiculate, bases obtuse-sagittate.
Corollas purple or mauve, narrowly funnel-shaped, limb 5-lobed.
Receptacle dentate-alveolate.
