Characteristics

Shrub or small tree, 1–5 m high with spreading, sometimes drooping branchlets; branches pale or dark brown, with protruding lenticels.. Leaves in whorls of 3–5, sometimes opposite on lower nodes; blade (narrowly) elliptic, 1.5–17 cm long, 0.5–5.5 cm wide, acuminate, apiculate or caudate at the apex, acumen 5–19 mm long, glabrous; petiole (1) 2–18 mm long, glabrous.. Inflorescence 1–11-flowered; peduncle 0.4–7 cm long, glabrous; bracts scaly; pedicels (1.5–)3–10 mm long, glabrous.. Flowers white, fragrant or not; sepals green, ovate or subulate, 1.3–2.5 mm long, acuminate at the apex, glabrous; corolla hypocrateriform, tinged pink in bud; tube (5–)7.2–17.5 mm long, glabrous outside, pubescent at the insertion of stamens and villose to the mouth; lobes elliptic, (3–)5.8–13 mm long, (1.5–)3.2–6.8 mm wide, obtuse or rounded at the apex, glabrous; stamens inserted (3.2–)4.5–5.8 mm above the corolla base; disk 0.5–0.9 mm high, annular or cupular; pistil (3.3–)4.7–5.8 mm long; ovary with partly fused carpels; style (1.5–)3.2–3.5 mm long.. Fruits bright orange to red, laterally compressed; when syncarpous, obcordate, 7–10 mm long, 11–19 mm in diameter, when one carpel developing obliquely ellipsoid, 10–13 mm long, 5–7 mm in diameter; seed 4–6 mm long, 3–5 mm in diameter.
