Characteristics

Shrub or tree 2–15 m. tall; stems glabrous or with very fine pubescence just above the nodes.. Leaf-blades oblong to oblong-lanceolate or broadly elliptic, 8.5–21 cm. long, 2.5–11 cm. wide, produced into a narrow obtuse acumen at the apex, cuneate at the base, finely adpressed hairy beneath and on the midrib above in very young leaves, but later glabrous or with very sparse hairs on midrib beneath; lateral nerves 10–15 on each side; petiole 1–2 cm. long (the 1–2 mm. in K. Schumann’s description must be an error), glabrous or puberulous; stipules ovate or narrowly triangular, cucullate, 4.5–9 mm. long, 2.5–3 mm. wide, ± pubescent or glabrous, glandular within, the ± numerous colleters 0.5 mm. long, eventually deciduous.. Inflorescences axillary, sometimes drying greenish blue, 1–3(–4 fide Schumann), up to 2.5 cm. long from each pubescent axillary cushion; individual peduncles 0.5–1.5 cm. long, pubescent below, glabrous above, with an involucre of puberulous components comprising 2 narrowly deltoid reduced stipules 1.7–2 mm. long, ± 1 mm. wide at the base, and 2 linear reduced leaves up to 2.5 mm. long, 0.5 mm. wide, about half-way up; pedicels 0–6 mm. long, pubescent or glabrescent.. Calyx-tube hemispherical, 0.5–1 mm. long; limb-tube 0.7–1.5 mm. long, repand-dentate, the teeth scarcely 0.5 mm. long, puberulous.. Corolla white or very pale green; tube 1.6–3 mm. long, the throat densely hairy; lobes triangular to ovate, 2–2.3 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide.. Anthers subsessile, included in the tube (fide Schumann) or, in material seen, anthers with short filaments 1 mm. long, just exserted.. Style scarcely 0.6 mm. long, with 5 minute stigma-lobes (fide Schumann) or, in material seen, stigma-lobes 4–5, ± sessile.. Disc domed, annular, grooved and microscopically papillate.. Fruit and seeds not seen.. Fig. 15.
