Robust scrambler or climber ± 3 m. long or sometimes (in Mozambique) a subshrub 0·5–2 m. tall.. Stems woody below, pubescent.. Leaflets 3, rhomboid to ovate, the laterals oblique, 2·1–14 cm. long, 1·5–13·5 cm. wide, shortly and bluntly acuminate, rounded or truncate at the base, pubescent above, sparsely to densely greyish velvety pubescent beneath; petiole 5–14 cm. long; rhachis 1·3–3·7 cm. long; petiolules 1·5–6 mm. long; stipules lanceolate, 5 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, pubescent.. Inflorescences axillary or terminal; rhachis 2–16 cm. long, usually branched; peduncles 1–6·5 cm. long; pedicels 6–9(–14) mm. long; bracts deciduous, elliptic, 5·5–7·5 mm. long, 2·5–4 mm. wide, pubescent.. Leaflets 3, 2–14 × 1.5–13.5 cm, terminal rhombic-ovate, the laterals similar but asymmetrical, acute to shortly acuminate at the apex, rounded to truncate at the base, darker and pubescent to glabrescent above, more densely pubescent or greyish velvety and with scattered red glands beneath (sometimes almost absent), at length ± glabrous; venation raised and reticulate beneath; petiole 2–14 cm long; rhachis 1–3.7 cm long; petiolules 1.5–6 mm long; stipules 5–6 × 2 mm, oblong-lanceolate, pubescent outside.
Standard yellow or orange-yellow inside striated with red-purple veins, cream-coloured outside with blackish-purple veining, 17–21 × 9–11 mm, narrowly obovate, sparsely to densely pubescent with tubercular based hairs; wings and keel reddish-purple to black or orange-yellow above and black in middle or base, 17 × 8 mm including 3 mm long claw.
Inflorescences axillary and terminal, mostly rather short (often shorter than the leaves) but occasionally long; rhachis 2–16(23) cm long, usually branched; peduncles 0.5–6.5 cm long; pedicels 6–9(14) mm long; bracts 4.5–7.5 × 2–4 mm, elliptic to ovate-acuminate, hairy outside, very quickly deciduous.
Erect plant with seasonal stems from a woody rootstock or upper parts scrambling or climbing, 0.5–2 m tall or c. 3 m long or small tree 7–12 m (fide Barbosa & Carvalho 4258 and Torre & Correia 16783); stems with short dense fulvous hairs.
Calyx pubescent and with some longer tubercular based hairs; tube 3.5 mm long; upper lobes joined to near apex to form a bifid lip 5 × 3.5 mm; laterals 3.1 × 1.1 mm, oblong-lanceolate; lowest lobe 5 × 1.1 mm, lanceolate.
Pods 2.8–3.2(3.8) × 0.6–0.7 cm, oblanceolate-falcate, the seeds ± in upper part, with very short pubescence and longer yellow slightly to distinctly glandular-based hairs.
Seeds blackish-red or purple-brown, 4.5–5 × 3.5–4.5 × 2 mm, oblong to rounded reniform.
