Sessile spikelet 5–9 mm long, narrowly ovate; inferior glume variously rugose or muricate (in the New World), rarely almost smooth (in the Flora Zambesiaca area), acute at the apex, awnless; superior glume awnless.
Racemes 16–30 cm long, the internodes exceeding the sessile spikelets, those towards the base of the raceme (5)9–18(23) mm long, those in the middle part 7–11 mm long, glabrous.
Leaf laminas 15–30 cm long, setaceous, involute.
Caespitose perennial; culms up to 120 cm high.
