Characteristics

A low growing shrub. It has many branches. It grows 50-90 cm high. The bark is grey-brown. The leaves are small and 1-3 cm wide. They are kidney shaped and thick. The leaves have 3 wide lobes and coarse teeth along the edge. The leaf stalks are hairy and shorter than the leaf blades. There are many flowers in a group 3-5 cm long. The flowers are dull purple. The fruit are orange-yellow berries. They are round and 5-7 mm across. They can be acid and sweet.

Thickets on rocky mountain slopes, ravines, streamsides; at elevations from 1,200-2,500 metres. Stony mountain slopes, among stony taluses, and in taluses in the middle and subalpine zones; at elevations from 1,500-3,000 metres.

It is a temperate plant. In Kazakhstan it grows on stony slopes in sub alpine mountain regions. In Pakistan it grows between 2,900-3,800 m altitude. In western China it grows between 1,200-2,500 m above sea level.
