Characteristics

Plants 50-100 mm high. Corm ovoid, 5-10 mm diam., oblique with crescent-shaped basal ridge, tunics woody, usually minutely pitted, with clusters of converging, soft-textured fibrils on basal ridge separated by apically grooved teeth. Stem subterranean or rarely shortly aerial. Leaves 3 to 6, lower 2 basal or all seemingly so in short-stemmed forms, terete-filiform, narrowly 4-grooved, 0.5-1.0 mm diam. Peduncles up to 4, semi-terete, erect or suberect in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow colourless membranous margins, 12-25 mm long, striate (5 or 6 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide, colourless membranous margins. Flowers white or pink to magenta with orange-yellow cup and dark lines in throat, outer tepals maroon or darkly feathered on reverse; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 4-6 mm long; tepals oblanceolate, 15-25 x 5-9 mm. Filaments 4-5 mm long, pilose basally, yellow; anthers 4-7 mm long, yellow. Style dividing just below or beyond anther apices. Capsules oblong, ± 10 mm long.

Plants 120-250 mm long. Corm with a crescent-shaped basal ridge with rows of minute fibril clusters. Stem short or sometimes up to 50 mm. Basal leaves 2 or more, filiform, 120-250 x 0.8-1 mm, grooves narrow. Bracts largely green or purplish, inner with wide, colourless membranous margins and green tip. Flowers 20-38 mm long, bright magenta-pink with dark veins in the throat and orange-yellow cup, outer perianth segments maroon on the backs. Perianth tube 4-6 mm long; segments 15-25 x 5-9 mm. Filaments 3-4 mm, orange-yellow, pilose in the lower half; anthers 4-7 mm long, pale yellow. Style 10-12 mm; stigmas more or less at anther tips. Capsules ellipsoid, on widely patent peduncles which straighten later.
