Characteristics

Plants 50-200 mm high. Corm globose or obovoid, 10-25 mm diam., rounded or crested below, tunics woody, split into curved or bent, grooved teeth below. Stem subterranean. Leaves 3 to 10, all evidently basal, terete or compressed-cylindric, narrowly or more widely 4-grooved, 1-4 mm diam. Peduncles up to 5, semi-terete, recurved and coiling in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow, brown-flecked, membranous margins expanding to prominent membranous tip, 10-30 mm long, closely ribbed (± 8 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide, brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers white, pale blue or lilac to magenta with whitish to golden-yellow cup sometimes veined with black, with or without purple blotches around cup, outer tepals blotches or feathered with purple on reverse; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 4-8 mm long; tepals oblanceolate to obovate, 15-35 x 3-15 mm. Filaments 4-8 mm long, pilose basally, yellow or blackish; anthers (2.5-)5.0-10.0 mm long, yellow, purple or black; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite anthers. Capsules cylindric, 10-14 mm long.

Leaves basal, terete to compressed cylindrical, 60-250(-400) x 1-4 mm, bent, rigid, grooves narrow or wide. Bracts green with closely spaced veins, outer with narrow, inner with wide, brown-streaked, or rarely almost colourless membranous margins and tip. Flowers (15-)20-40(-45) mm long, magenta-rose to pale lilac-pink or white, usually with a violet-black blotch sometimes reduced to a few lines on each segment in the throat, cup yellow, sometimes with dark lines, outer segments greenish yellow on the backs, with dark lines and feathered veining. Perianth tube 4-8 mm long; segments (10-)18-35 x (3-)5-15 mm. Filaments 4-8 mm; anthers 5-10 mm long, violet or yellow. Style 6-10 mm; stigmas reaching halfway up the anthers or almost to their tips. Capsules on bent peduncles which twist spirally when dry.

Bracts green, ovate, concave, margins membranous. Flowers 1-5, magenta to pale pink or white; perianth tube 4-8 mm long, funnel-shaped; tepals 18-35 mm long, obovate. Stamens erect; filaments 4-8 mm long, pilose below; anthers 5-10 mm long, black, violet or yellow; pollen golden-yellow. Style 6-10 mm long; stigma 2-3 m long. Flowering time Apr.-Oct. Capsule cylindrical or ellipsoid.
Cormous geophyte, 80-150 mm tall, corms rounded at base with curved acuminate teeth. Leaves several, occasionally minutely hairy. Flowers magenta to pale pink or white with dark veins and dark blotches at edge of yellow, streaked cup; outer bract with brown dry margins and tip, inner bracts with wide dry margins; fruiting peduncles recurved and later coiled.
