Characteristics

Plants 30-200 mm high. Corm globose, obliquely flattened toward base with crescent-shaped basal ridge, 8-15 mm diam., tunics splitting into fine parallel fibrils along ridge. Stem subterranean or aerial, exserted up to 200 mm, elongating in fruit. Leaves 3 or 4, lowermost 1 basal when stem exserted, ± 3-angled or narrowly3-winged, almost T-shaped in section with 2 wide grooves separating a narrow and a wider rib, 1.5-2.5 mm diam., rib margin ciliolate, cauline leaves clustered at stem apex. Peduncles up to 7, up to 70 mm long, semiterete, often ciliolate along edges, sharply recurved in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow membranous margins, 15-18 mm long, lightly striate (5 or 6 veins/mm), inner bracts entirely membranous or scarious, central portion conspicuously brown-spotted, with broad margins streaked or speckled with brown. Flowers white with broad black blotch edged with yellow in throat and extending to base of cup, outer tepals green on reverse; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 5-6 mm long; tepals oblanceolate to obovate, 15-28 x 5-10 mm. Filaments 5-6 mm long, pilose basally, pale yellow; anthers 5-6 mm long, yellow. Style dividing below or beyond anther tips, branches 2 mm long, divided halfway. Capsules ellipsoid or shortly cylindric, ± 10 mm long.

Plants 120-200 mm long. Stem short and hidden or up to 25 mm long. Basal leaf more or less 3-angled, almost T-shaped in transverse section, with only two wide stomatiferous grooves, 110-200 x 1.5-2.5 mm, minutely ciliate on the rib margins. Inner bract wholly membranous, sometimes with reddish veins. Flowers 25-38 mm long, white, each segment with a large black, yellow-margined blotch in the throat, outer segments bright green on the backs. Style 10-12 mm; stigmas reaching halfway up the anthers or to the tips.
