Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Iridaceae > Romulea

Characteristics

Plants 60-250(-500) mm high. Corm ovoid, 10-20 mm diam., oblique with crescent-shaped basal ridge, tunics cartilaginous or papery, with clusters of converging fibrils on ridge, each cluster splitting longitudinally into narrow strips fringed on margins, decaying above into a softly fibrous neck 20-80 mm long. Stem aerial, filiform, exserted up to 300 mm, branching near apex. Leaves 3 or 4, lower 1 or 2 basal, terete-filiform, narrowly 4-grooved, 0.5-1.0 mm diam., glabrous or ciliolate on rib margins, cauline leaves much shorter and clustered near top of stem. Peduncles up to 4, terete, suberect in fruit; outer bracts green or submembranous with narrow colourless or reddish membranous margins and tips, 10-25 mm long, lightly striate (5 to 7 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide membranous margins, usually rusty-red in upper half or colourless. Flowers pink to purple with yellow or orange cup and with diffuse purple blotches in throat, outer tepals reddish purple or veined and feathered on reverse; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 4-7 mm long; tepals oblanceolate or obovate, 16-25 x 7-10 mm. Filaments 5-8 mm long, sparsely puberulous basally or glabrous, yellow; anthers 4-6 mm long, yellow to mauve. Style dividing shortly below anther apices. Capsules oblong, ± 8 mm long.
More
Older corm covered with thick layers of fibrous remains of old leaf bases and with apical fibres 20-80 mm long around the base of the shoot; (younger corm as in R. longipes). Basal leaves sometimes more than 2 or only one. Bracts submembranous or greenish, outer with narrow, and inner with wider membranous margins rusty-red in the upper half or sometimes colourless. Flowers magenta to pale pink, with a diffuse violet-blue blotch on each segment in the throat, cup often yellow with small orange markings; outer segments on the backs reddish purple or with 3 violet veins and fine feathered veining towards the margins. Stigmas reaching below or almost to the anther tips.
Perennial herb, geophyte, 0.10-0.35 m high; stem erect, terete. Leaves 2-6, basal 2, filiform, narrowly 4-grooved, sometimes ciliate. Bracts submembranous or greenish in centre, margins rusty red or membranous. Flowers usually 1-3, magenta to pink, marked purple around yellow cup; perianth tube 4-7 mm long, funnel-shaped; tepals 16-25 mm long, oblanceolate. Stamens erect or slightly incurved on apex; filaments 5-8 mm long, orange-or green-yellow, slightly pilose or glabrous in lower half; anthers 4-6 mm long, pale yellow or violet. Style 10-12 mm long; stigma ± 1 mm long. Flowering time Oct.-Dec. Capsule ellipsoid.
