Characteristics

Plants (50-)100-200(-300) mm high. Corm ovoid, 6-15 mm diam., oblique with crescent-shaped basal ridge, tunics woody, with clusters of converging fibrils on ridge. Stem aerial, exserted up to 200 mm, branching near apex, glabrous or ciliate on angles in upper part. Leaves 2 or 3, lower 1 basal, terete, narrowly 4-grooved, 0.5-1.5 mm diam., pubescent or villous on margins of median ribs, cauline leaves clustered near top of stem. Peduncles up to 3, terete, glabrous or ciliolate on angles, suberect or slightly spreading in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow colourless membranous margins, 12-20 mm long, striate (5 to 7 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers orange with small yellow cup, outer tepals greenish or reddish on reverse; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 4-6 mm long; tepals oblanceolate, 15-30 x 6-12 mm. Filaments included in cup, 6-7 mm long, pilose basally, yellow; anthers 4-6 mm long, apically connate when young, yellow. Style dividing near anther apices. Capsules oblong, 10-15 mm long.

Corm with apical fibres 10-15 mm long. Stem angled, often sparsely ciliate on the angles. Basal leaf single, 1-2 mm in diam., with white hairs on the margins of the two median ribs, grooves somewhat widened. Bracts green, inner with wide, brown-speckled or brown-streaked membranous margins narrowing to a small scarious tip. Flowers orange-yellow, outer segments on the backs reddish brown or greenish brown. Perianth segments 8-12 mm wide. Filaments 6-7 mm, pilose at the bases or up to the tips.
