Characteristics

Plants 30-100(-150) mm high. Corm globose, 7-15 mm diam., obliquely rounded below, tunics woody, split into bent, grooved or channelled teeth below. Stem subterranean. Leaves 5 to 12, all evidently basal, filiform, narrowly 4-grooved, 1.0-1.5 mm diam. Peduncles up to 5, semi-terete, recurved and coiling in fruit; outer bracts softly herbaceous and submembranous or herbaceous in upper half, striate (± 6 veins/mm), with broad, mostly fawn and brown-speckled membranous margins and tip, 14-24 mm long, inner bracts with wide, brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers magenta, often fading blue at tips, with yellow cup edged with narrow blue band and stained brown at base, outer tepals irregularly marked or feathered with purple on reverse; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 3-4 mm long; tepals obovate, 15-28 x 8-15 mm. Filaments ± included, ± 4 mm long, pubescent basally, brownish; anthers 3-5 mm long, circinnate, purple ageing yellow; pollen rust-coloured. Style usually dividing between base and middle of anthers, rarely exserted up to 4 mm beyond anthers, branches forked. Capsules oblong, 8-10 mm long.

Plants 120-300 mm long. Corm tunics with grooved, bent, basal teeth. Leaves basal, filiform, usually arcuate, 120-300 x c. 1 mm, with the adaxial groove often open up to 30 mm from the tip. Bracts green in the centre of the upper half, often submembranous below, with wide, mostly fawn-coloured membranous margins and tips. Flowers 20-35 mm long, rosy-magenta, with a narrow blue transverse band, cup buttercup-yellow with a brown base, outer segments with 5-7 violet veins and fine feathered veining, or reddish purple or irregularly marked. Perianth tube 3-4 mm long; segments usually obtuse, 15-28 x 8-15 mm. Filaments 4 mm; anthers 3-5 mm long, violet, later yellow with incurved tips, pollen brown or rust-coloured. Style 5-7 mm with acuminate, often violet branches; stigmas minute, terminal, with a tuft of long papillae. Capsule on a spirally coiled peduncle when dry.
Cormous geophyte, mostly 80-120 mm tall, corm round at base with curved acuminate teeth. Leaves several, narrowly 4-grooved. Flowers magenta with a narrow blue band around the yellow cup, brown at base, pollen brown; outer bract submembranous below with wide hyaline margins and tips, inner bract with wide hyaline margins; fruiting peduncles recurved, later coiled.
