Characteristics

Plants 50-100(-150) mm high. Corm globose, 5-20 mm diam., obliquely rounded below, tunics woody, split into bent, grooved teeth below. Stem subterranean. Leaves 2 to 6, all evidently basal, terete-filiform, narrowly 4-grooved, 1-2 mm diam. Peduncles up to 6, semi-terete, 30-140 mm long, recurved and later coiling in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow, translucent or brown-blotched membranous margins expanding to a well-developed, brown-blotched, membranous tip, 12-25 mm long, closely ribbed (± 8 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide, brown-flecked or rarely colourless membranous margins. Flowers pale or buttercup-yellow with darker yellow cup, unmarked or with brown blotches around cup, sometimes reduced to lines, outer tepals feathered or blotched with brown on reverse; perianth tube cup-or funnel-shaped, 4-6 mm long; tepals oblanceolate, (16-)18-35 x (4-)5-15 mm. Filaments 4-7 mm long, pilose basally, yellow; anthers (4-)6-9 mm long, yellow. Style dividing between middle and top of anthers. Capsules oblong, ± 10 mm long.

Flowers buttercup-yellow, usually with a dark reddish brown blotch or three dark lines on each segment, outer segments with brownish black lines and feathered veining or speckling on the backs. Perianth tube often cup-shaped. Anthers (3-)6-9 mm long, dark brown or sometimes yellow.
