Characteristics

Plants (50-)80-150 mm high. Corm globose, rounded, 10-20 mm diam., oblique, tunics woody, splitting into curved teeth below. Stem subterranean. Leaves 3 to 8, basal, terete, narrowly 4-grooved, 1-2 mm diam. Peduncles up to 4, angled, curved in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow, colourless or ± entirely black membranous margins, 20-30 mm long, closely and heavily ribbed (8 to 10 veins/mm), usually with stouter midvein in upper half, inner bracts 2-keeled with stouter veins on keels, with colourless or brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers cup-shaped, shiny strawberry or claret-red with black blotch on pale greyish or purple background above yellow mark (sometimes with black median line) in throat, outer tepals with dark feathering on reverse; perianth tube bowl-shaped, 2-3 mm long; tepals obovate-cuneate, 25-40(-45) x 12-25 mm long. Filaments inserted at base of tube, 3-6 mm long, either oblong and longitudinally appressed or connate in stout cylindric collar, glabrous or pilose basally, blackish; anthers 10-15 mm long, apically joined at first, yellow or purplish with yellow pollen. Style dividing opposite base to middle of anthers, branches forked. Capsules oblong, 10-15 mm long.

Cormous geophyte, mostly 50-100 mm tall, corm round at base, with curved acuminate teeth. Leaves 3-5, with 4 grooves, narrowly 4-grooved. Flowers dark red with black blotches at the edge of a creamy cup, filaments joined in a column; outer bracts keeled with narrow, dry, usually brown margins, inner bract 2-keeled, with dry brown margins; fruiting peduncles curved.
Flowers 30-45(-55) mm long, deep claret-red, each segment with a black blotch on a blue or purplish grey or sometimes pale yellow background. Filaments joined, forming a short, stout, shiny-black column; anthers 10-15 mm long. Style 8-12 mm long.
